In June of 2026, ChinaFile Senior Fellow Jessica Batke co-organized a workshop on China research security with Katja Drinhausen and Daria Impiombato of the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin. The workshop brought together scholars and practitioners from academia, industry, journalism, and think tanks who conduct research on China to discuss how to navigate new risks in their work and how those working on and in China can conduct their research responsibly and safely.
Today, MERICS published “Secure Research on and in China: Lessons from Community Experiences,” by Batke, Drinhausen, and Impiombato, which distills discussion at the workshop and makes recommendations for scholars and their institutions.

ChinaFile provided support for the workshop through a grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.
