‘Service Day’ Activities in Tianjin, Outreach in Beijing and Jiangsu

Today, the Tianjin Public Security Bureau (PSB) Foreign NGO Management Office held a “Service Day” activity. Among those attending were the chief representatives from eight foreign NGOs based in Tianjin; representatives from eight Professional Supervisory Units (PSUs), including the municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs, Education Commission, Commerce Commission, General Labor Union, Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs, Taxation Administration, Entry-Exit Administration, and the People’s Bank of China; as well as individuals from other government departments and tertiary educational institutions engaged in related work. PSUs “patiently” answered foreign NGOs’ questions related to various offices’ roles and responsibilities, foreigners’ visas, work permits, and bank accounts, and tax reporting.

China: Big Data Fuels Crackdown in Minority Region

Chinese authorities are building and deploying a predictive policing program based on big data analysis in Xinjiang, Human Rights Watch said today. The program aggregates data about people – often without their knowledge – and flags those it deems potentially threatening to officials.
